New Exhibit Puts Fashion Capitals At Your Fingertips

All hail Paris! It’s arguably the oldest and most reputable fashion city in the world, with its designer frocks dating as far back as the 18th century.

A couple hundred years later, New York City, Milan and London joined the prestigious short list of fashion leaders.

And did you know it wasn’t until the 1980’s that Japan had a “fashion revolution” and Tokyo became known as the fifth fashion capital? Followed by the ’90s, which ushered in bold designers like Martin Margiela, who put the lesser-known city of Antwerp on the style map.

These are only some of the history lessons learned at Global Fashion Capitals, a new exhibit now on display at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Each designated city displays a timeline of designs, some dating back to 1890, and leading up to modern day ensembles. Designers range from the late Cristobal Balenciaga to international up-and-comers to NYC’s own legend, Alexander Wang.

Perhaps the most important thing you can take away from this exhibit is that even the most unexpected cities, like Lagos and Istanbul, are on their way to becoming major fashion contributors. Fashion is now seen as a way to help aid economies and spread a country’s cultural identity around the world.

But let’s be honest – Paris is still killin’ it.

You can catch the exhibit at The Museum at FIT in NYC until November 14.
