A few weeks ago, amid a large round of layoffs, rumors spread that Nike was shuttering its Fuelband program for good, meaning those who hadn’t already invested in Nike’s wearable tech with the ever-popular Fuelband SE (and other iterations) would be SOL. But based on recent comments that Nike’s President and CEO Mark Parker made on CNBC, there’s a second life for Fuelband in the works with Apple and other strategic partnerships, reports Mashable.

Though it’s true that Nike will be shutting down the hardware part of Fuelband–no more future versions of their wearable tech devices will be on sale–the software component is still very much alive. Parker told CNBC “We are focusing more on the software side of the [Fuelband] experience. I think we will be part of wearables going forward. It’ll be integrated into other products that we create, and then we’ll look at expanding our partnerships to create more reach for the NikeFuel and Fuel system that we have. And the best way to do that, we think, is through the best partnerships that we can find.”

Parker wouldn’t go into the specifics of Nike’s Apple relationship. Besides stating the fact that the two companies have worked together for years now, he did divulge the following: “I will just say the relationship between Nike and Apple will continue, and I am personally, as we all are at Nike, very excited about what’s to come.”

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for where the NikeFuel technology pops up next. Considering the coming launch of the Nike+ FuelLab–” a partnership program designed to connect Nike with industry leading companies who share our commitment to using emerging technologies to create better solutions for athletes”–the possibilities seem almost endless.

As long as there are good-looking options, we’ll keep paying attention.

Do you use wearable technology to keep track of your personal fitness?
