Nordstrom Fires Employee For Racially Charged Facebook Post

The year is ending on an incredibly heated precipice when citizens and the law enforcement hired to protect them are clashing– every day.

As a result, we’ve seen headlines about protests gone violent, legal cases and heated arguments about race in this country. But now, the retail world has gotten involved with Nordstrom being the first.

Aaron Hodges, a Portland, Oregon sales associate posted on his Facebook account, “Instead of slamming the police, I prefer a Kenny Fort approach. Every time an unarmed black man is killed, you kill a decorated white officer, on his door step in front of his family.”

There’s no word on how Hodges’ heated statement was brought to Nordstrom’s attention, but a few individuals were able to grab a screenshot of the post with Hodges profile photo, proudly showing his employment in their downtown location.

When asked on social media –by several people– Nordstrom let it be known that Hodges was no longer employed with them via Twitter:

The whole debacle raises an interesting question about freedom of speech, private social media accounts and accountability. While Hodges’ comment was wildly flagrant, do employers have the responsibility of now vetting the personal beliefs of staffers?

In this case, yes.
