Princess Diana’s Iconic Versace Dress Sold for How Much in Auction?

It’s been almost 20 years since Princess Diana’s death, but her style continues to command an incredible amount of attention — and money. The royal’s iconic embellished Atelier Versace gown went up for auction a few weeks ago and officially closed with a $200,000 final bid.

The princess’s icy blue figure-hugging design, featuring gold-tone stud embellishments, went up for bidding via Julien’s Auctions with an opening price of $30,000. Estimates put the final bid at about $80,000, so it was a major surprise when the winner took home the iconic design for well over twice that.

The royal first wore the famous Atelier Versace creation for a 1991 photo shoot with photographer Patrick Demarchelier, but it was later used on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1997 after the princess’s untimely death. It was reportedly the first gown Gianni Versace (Donatella’s brother and founder of the label) designed for the royal.
