Sadly, The ‘Makeup Tax’ May Cost You A Job Promotion

Last month, during a Facebook Q&A with Hillary Clinton, staffer Libby Brittain asked a surprising question about maintaining a beauty routine with a busy job.

Per The Atlantic:

“Every morning, as my boyfriend zips out the door and I spend 30+ minutes getting ready, I wonder about how the ‘hair-and-makeup tax’ affects other women—especially ones I admire in high-pressure, public-facing jobs,” Brittain wrote. “I know these questions can seem fluffy, but as a young professional woman, I’d genuinely love to hear about how you manage getting ready each morning (especially during your time traveling as Secretary of State and now on the campaign trail) while staying focused on the ‘real’ work ahead of you that day.”

Unsurprisingly, “some days are better than others” for the presidential candidate, but an interesting point is made: select employers still set ridiculous standards for their employees.

The Atlantic cites one study that found participants were likely to give “prestigious jobs” to women who wore makeup. Additionally, male restaurant customers also tip more when their waitress (not waiter) is wearing beauty products.

There are also a ton of other studies–conducted by beauty companies of course–that claim 50-80% of women use makeup on the daily. When you factor in the $60 billion made by these same companies every year, the numbers make sense.

However, where’s the middle ground for those who simply don’t care about covering under eye circles or wearing red lipstick? Should they suffer professionally because of their personal choices?

This discussion is far from over, but we’d love to hear your thoughts. Read more about the “makeup tax” here.
