SCAD To Honor British Designer Vivienne Westwood

SCAD, better known as the Savannah College of Art and Design, is slated to give legendary British designer Dame Vivienne Westwood with an honored distinction. The 74-year-old Tintwistle, Cheshire, England born fashion designer, businesswoman, and activist was largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. From her work with Malcolm McLaren’s boutique in the King’s Road (which became famous as “SEX”) to tying her merchandise to political causes such as nuclear disarmament and anti-cracking, Westwood’s career is synonymous with the word — legendary.
SCAD will pay special tribute to Westwood with its André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented in conjunction with the school’s student fashion show. The former editor-at-large for Vogue, Talley has previously award the distinction to the likes of Diane von Furstenberg, the late Oscar de la Renta, John Galliano, and Francisco Costo. On May 15, he will be present to hand over the Lifetime Achievement Award to Westwood in “recognition of her achievements and legacy in fashion.”
Westwood, who is not shy to speak in public, will also sit down in an intimate chat with students and fashion-hounds to give insight into her career and causes with Véronique Hyland. The fashion news editor for New York Magazine‘s The Cut and Dame Westwood will offer an intriguing and introspective look at the life and times of one of fashion’s most storied treasures.
In addition to the award ceremony, Talley and SCAD will also be exhibiting 25 of Dame Vivienne Westwood’s most iconic looks that will be on view to the public from May 19 to September 13.
