See Cate Blanchett’s Otherworldly Shoot for W Magazine — Plus, 5 Red Carpet Moments that Prove She’s A High Fashion Alien

By now, it’s pretty much an indisputable fact that Cate Blanchett is not of this world. Or, at the very least, her sense of style comes to us lowly earthlings from a high fashion galaxy far, far away.

The actress-slash-style-unicorn has clearly never met a couture dress she didn’t like, regularly wearing complicated runway ensembles on the red carpet and making them look as casual as your favorite pair of sweats. As if her avant grade press and award show apparel wasn’t impressive enough, the Carol actress regularly blows every other fashion it-girl out of the water in her magazine editorials as well. Blanchett isn’t interested in creating just another pretty portrait of herself, opting instead to capture images that are super-unique and artistic.

Her latest cover and spread for W magazine is case in point. Shot by her longtime collaborator, master of stylish surrealism Tim Walker, the images were inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince and given a bleak, post-apocalyptic bent. Many of the clothes in the spread were created especially for the pair’s collaboration, including a dress by Stella McCartney, bloomers by Alberta Ferretti, and a pair of Prada pajamas that are the spitting image of the ones found on The Little Prince himself.

Despite the fact that the word “flawless” has basically become synonymous with Blanchett’s style, the actress insists in her interview with the magazine that it’s actually quite the opposite, saying, “I am not perfect. The wheels are constantly falling off.” But over the years, no matter her protestations, the actress has proven time and time again that she’s about as close to sublime as us mere mortals can get. If you need further proof that Blanchett is a high fashion martian, check out five of her most out-of-this-world red carpet looks, above. Just don’t blame us when your own wardrobe starts looking depressingly terrestrial.

What do you think of Cate Blanchett’s shoot for W? What’s your favorite red carpet look from the actress?
