StyleBlazer Exclusive: Tatyana Ali Gives Us The Secret To Her Daily Confidence

It wasn’t a coincidence that we got on the subject of natural hair and beauty products with Tatyana Ali when chatting with her on Tuesday.

Aside from being a friend-in-our-head for most of the 90s as Ashley Banks on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and having a gorgeous head of hair herself, the actress is also a spokesperson for My Black is Beautiful’s ‘Imagine a Future’ campaign.

As an advocate for empowering and promoting positive self-image to young black girls, the 35-year-old works to combat negative societal and cultural associations with black beauty. That day, she was chatting with us to demystify her hair routine– which is actually pretty simple.

We also chatted about her years on ‘Fresh Prince,’ love of Lupita Nyong’o and the first thing she says to herself every morning. Read it all, below:

On the power images have on self-confidence: “We think we can become what we see. Images are the same as the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of achieving. If positive images are not put there and the conversation says that we can’t achieve it, then we tend to believe it. Part of this campaign on Facebook is creating a space to say it is possible and talk about it– women of all ages can join the conversation. And we have all types of women from engineers to mathematicians.”

On why she loves Lupita: “People are enraptured by her beauty– she’s outwardly stunning, has a ridiculous sense of style– but what’s really marvelous about her is when she opens her mouth. She’s brilliant. Incredibly smart. There would be something seriously, irreparably wrong if we didn’t fall in love with her.”

On embracing her natural hair: “My hair is chemical-free, always. More and more I’m trying to wear my hair literally how God made me. My hair tends to be straight, my dad is Indian so it’s somewhere between wavy and straight… sometimes it’s curly, it just depends [chuckles]. Sometimes I braid it into rings at night but I let it do what it does. In my everyday life, I like to go as natural as possible.”
