Taylor Swift Has Finally Welcomed New York … to Her Wardrobe

Not all of the stereotypes about New Yorkers are true (we don’t exclusively eat sidewalk-cart pretzels, for instance), but there is one that is pretty accurate: We love an all-black wardrobe. Part of it comes from the ease of knowing exactly what you’re going to wear, and the other part comes from the danger of sitting on subway seats in anything that shows stains. Yes, if you live N.Y.C long enough, you’ll find that no person is immune to the city’s all-black uniform, not even if that person happens to be perennially crop-topped ray of sunshine Taylor Swift.

A little over a year after the release of 1989, which kicks off with her song “Welcome to New York,” the city’s sense of style appears to finally be rubbing off on the pop star. All year, Tay unapologetically wore crop tops and circle skirts in shades spanning the pastel rainbow, but as of late, there’s been a remarkable dearth of color of any kind in her wardrobe. Over the past few months, Swift appears to have become a full-blown New York native, sporting some surprisingly tough ensembles all in head-to-toe black.

It all started this summer when the singer debuted a body harness atop a beat-up black tank top paired with a studded out Louis Vuitton bag. After that one brief foray into edginess, Taylor quickly returned to her typical, super-girly style. But lately, a Manhattanite’s fashion sensibility seems to have taken hold over Tay once again.

First, in early October, Taylor was spotted wearing an Audrey Hepburn-esque turtleneck and skinny jeans while leaving the recording studio. Then this month she wore a racy David Koma cutout mini dress to the Hollywood Film Awards. This week, Swift upped the ante even further, wearing an all-black, faux-wrap self-promotional street style look and then doubling down on the monochromatic motif in a layered knit and leather ensemble. Taylor is testament to the fact that New York isn’t just a place, it’s a state of mind.
