The cat eye continues to be coveted for its versatility. It looks good in any color, can be drawn long or short and it’s appropriate for both work and play. Unfortunately, it’s also one of those makeup techniques that seems simple in theory, but can actually result in a hot mess.

Unless you’ve got the trained hands of an MUA, chances are you’ve already spent many a night crafting a crooked line across your eyelids, only to start over and eventually irritate the skin. In an effort to save you time and frustration, I’ve put together a quick and easy cat eye starter kit for those with shaky hands.

First, if you’re still a makeup newbie and not eager to spend an entire paycheck on designer products, I highly suggest investing in the Sephora Collection. As someone who tries new makeup on an almost weekly basis, this brand remains old faithful for its budget-friendly prices and long wear. The pointy tip on the waterproof liquid liner ($12) makes drawing a cat eye less daunting since it doesn’t carry an abundance of product and glides onto the skin in a thin line.

Like your foundation, buildable coverage can also be applied to your cat eye look. Apply tiny dots along the lash line and connect after for the sleekest application. And if you fail (we’ve all been there), the Sephora Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover ($10.50) takes everything off in one swipe; great news for those with sensitive skin and/or eyes. Alternatively, if makeup isn’t an everyday priority, you can have lots of fun with these eyeliner appliques ($9) when you’re feeling extra frisky. We may have to invest in these for Halloween! Now, let’s talk different types of liner.

Precision Tip (For Beginners)

Again, if you have not so steady hands, but still want precision, pen tip eyeliners are your best bet. They allow more control over the type of cat eye you want. Press down harder for a thicker line or gently glide across the lash line for a thinner result.

While Urban Decay’s 24/7 Liner’s precision tip packs less product on the applicator–that’s a good thing–some may prefer the cushion-y feel of NARS’ felt tip. It is perfect for making a sleek cat eye.
