Aside from the groom, the most important element of the wedding is the dress. Duh.

I, personally, choose to say “Yes” to the dress by going to NYC’s famous Kleinfeld Bridal Boutique but for the adventurous, there are so many more options. Believe it or not, there are designers on Etsy that not only make custom dresses but can create fantastic wedding gowns for your special day– all to your particulars.

One of the more successful talents is Gaby Bayona of Truvelle. The Vancouver-based designer creates gowns with custom appeal. Flowy, incredibly feminine and delicately detailed, her work is simply, beautiful. Bayona’s gowns range between $1500 and $2000 and are made to order. Therefore every piece has a story and journey.

To get more insight into her brand, StyleBlazer chatted with the talent for a one-on-one.

On how she got into design: “My mom is a seamstress, so I’ve been surrounded by gowns my whole life. Professionally, I’ve been making gowns since 2010.”

On why she works with a template: “I no longer create custom wedding gowns, but am able to customize my current offerings. Since each gown is made-to-order, we’re able to mix-and-match aspects from our designs, creating the perfect Truvelle dress.”

On a favorite style or design detail she has: “I love chiffon skirts – they’re effortless and comfortable while still being striking.”

On working with Etsy: “I started my brand on Etsy, and credit it with the rapid pace Truvelle has grown. Within a couple of weeks, I was getting features, inquiries, and blog postings. Within a couple of months, I sold my first gown and was contacted by my first retailer. Since then, my retailers have grown to 20 spanning four different continents and my following to thousands. Etsy has given independent designers a worldwide platform, where not only the product is celebrated but the story behind each as well.”

On her clientele and her craziest client: “Our brides are effortless, refined, and modern: I feel very fortunate to have found such an amazing group of girls. I haven’t done any crazy gowns since switching my business model is made-to-order, but when I was doing custom I would get interesting requests all the time. The most memorable goes to a bride who wanted her custom gown hand-beaded in India. She sourced her fabric, had us create the foundational pieces, shipped it to India, and then had it sent back to Canada for us to finish it. The entire process took close to a year and the final product was the heaviest gown I had ever worked with.”

On what a wedding gown designer should possess: “The ability to put yourself in the shoes of your clients.”
