The Fashion Spot has been laid off members of its editorial team. According to Fashionista, Amina Akhtar, a longtime editor within the fashion industry, has been let go from her position of editorial director.

Akhtar, who was the founding editor of The Cut and former executive editor of Elle.com, was initially brought on as editorial director of the site just 11 months ago. She also previously worked at Vogue as the digital editions editor. Her firing from Elle.com last year was highly controversial. TotallyHer Media, the company that owns The Fashion Spot, might not be a household entity, but it was making headway in the online landscape by bringing in a monthly audience of 2.5 million, per Comscore.

As of 2015, the site claims to bring in 4.3 million readers per month, with 70,000 invitation-only forum members since it launched in July 2001. Akhtar’s hiring announcement came in declaration that her addition was to bolster the editorial team.

Akhtar had already confirmed her exit from the company, saying, “I had already [been] preparing to leave,” in an e-mail to Fashionista. In addition to her, the other editor, Meg Clark, who ran the site’s social media, was let go. Clark declined to comment and no members of the site’s sales staff have been affected.

For those unfamiliar with The Fashion Spot, the site established itself in 2001 as the first-ever online community of designers, stylists, and industry influencers.

Leaders such as June Ambrose and Robert Verdi helped the site create premium content that spoke to the passionate fashionista and trend influencers. By providing in-depth coverage of fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and celebrity trends, The Fashion Spot aims to move forward without the two editors.

Update:

In an earlier version we noted that The Fashion Spot has “finished its course,” which is an incorrect statement. As noted by The Fashion Spot spokesperson, Akhtar and Clark being laid off “by no means constitutes the shuttering of theFashionSpot as a property.” We also stated TotallyBeauty.com would takeover, which they claim is incorrect as well.
