Victor Cruz Has a ’12-Spray Method’ for Applying Fragrance (Plus, 9 More Style and Grooming Rules from the NFL Star)

Victor Cruz has posted some pretty impressive stats as New York Giants wide receiver, but he’s a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world, too. He’s already landed a spot on a Best-Dressed list, received a Style Award (for Most Stylish Athlete of the Year in 2013) and he’s a familiar face at New York (and Paris!) Men’s Fashion Week. And now Cruz is entering his second year as the face of Hugo Boss’s ‘Success Behind the Game’ campaign as well as its Boss Bottled Collection. To celebrate, the NFL pro revealed his rigorous style regimen to PEOPLE.

Pump your pals for style tips
“Russell Westbrook, Lebron James and J.R Smith…these are all guys that I’m fortunate enough to call friends. Whenever we see each other, we either compliment each other or we make fun of something, or we just ask each other, ‘what do you like in fashion right now? What are you looking for? What do you have specifically on the horizon?’”

Buy boxer briefs. Period
“The ultimate guy style is boxer briefs. When you’re with your significant other and you’re about to be intimate and you take your pants off, it’s a little bit more fashionable, in my opinion.”

Find your date night uniform
“I like to wear a button up [with] tapered sweatpants or jeans. And my thing is, I like to wear all black when I go out. It’s chic.”

Change up your haircut
“Spice things up a little bit, but [don’t go] crazy. I think I’m going to put some sort of design on my head, like a word or something.”

And the same goes for your scent
“I always like to change up my scent for the season — really just switch it up. So now that fall is approaching I love woody notes.”

Then apply it pretty much everywhere
“I have a 12 spray method, I kind of put it everywhere: four sprays on my neck, four on my wrist, chest, I even put some on my hands and mix it with lotion and put in on my arms.” Cruz swears this isn’t overkill. “People usually just ask, ‘what is that?’ As opposed to, ‘that’s too much.’”

Embrace the broclet (that’s a bracelet for men)
“I’m a fan jewelry. I’ve gotten into [wearing] bracelets. It’s been a challenge finding the right one, but David Yurman makes some really good ones.”

You can have a guilty pleasure, but make sure you give back, too
“I’ve got to be somewhere around 400-450 pairs of sneakers. I have a room in my home that I’ve dedicated to all of them. It’s pretty intense. But I’ve given a lot away. My mom takes a bunch once a month and donates them to Salvation Army or she sends them off to Puerto Rico to kids that are less fortunate.”

(Don’t be afraid to) be a sensitive guy
“I don’t even know if this is manly to say, but I have sensitive armpits. I use Dove’s unscented women’s deodorant, and it works wonders.”

And it may sound cliché, but be yourself
“You may see guys on TV that you aspire to dress like, but you have to understand your fit, your frame. It’s your body, be comfortable in it.”
