Weight Or Cancer? Plus Size Model Shamed Into Misdiagnosis

For those of you who need a little #MondayMotivation to know yourself, Elly Mayday certainly has a story to tell. The Canadian model went through one of the most eye-opening experiences that led to her discovering a diagnosis of cancer.

Essentially, the plus size model had reoccurring back pains that were so intense that she went to the hospital four times for treatment. Each time, she was prescribed painkillers and sent home. Doctors attributed the pain to her weight, suggested she shed the pounds and work out her “core.”

Eventually Mayday decided to take the issue into her own hands and get a CT scan that revealed she had a rare form of ovarian cancer. “I didn’t think about it being cancer until about an hour before [the biopsy],” she told PEOPLE. The findings resulted in a hysterectomy and three months of chemotherapy, as well as a nine-hour surgery to remove tumors. Just two months ago, they removed the remaining mass of the tumor.

But as a result of the treatment, as in most cases of cancer, Mayday lost 60 lbs going down to 120 lbs. What happened next was the truly surprising part.

“Those people weren’t really my fans,” she says of people now shaming her on social media for being too skinny. “People are quick to judge or quick to say what’s on the tip of their tongue without thinking about the person behind it. But it really didn’t bother me too much.”

Despite the rollercoaster of an experience, Mayday has found the positive in the experience. Having posed for Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngel campaign and continuing work as a model, she’s just happy to shed light on the unassuming nature of cancer.

“I don’t refer to myself as [cancer free],” she says, but “I’m as good as I can be.”
