“Shea Butter is a natural humectant that is rich in the antioxidants Vitamins A and E,” she says. “Natural ingredients that come from plants such as essential oils like lavender and tea tree oil.” This brand–established in Harlem almost 25 years ago–also utilizes neem oil for inflammatory properties.

Coconut oil in particular is still the most sought after beauty must have, but a lot of us tend to use it incorrectly, which can actually lead to dry skin. Avoid a mad scientist experiment by keeping track of what works for you.

“Coconut oil can be drying, but…sometimes cocktailing can amplify the good effects of the oils. Start off with fewer blends and write them down. Coconut oil is always a good base oil to start with that helps to ‘carry’ other oils. If it is drying, start with less. Just like in all aspects of beauty, some ingredients do not agree with all people.”

Once you’ve concocted a potion that satisfies your skin needs, remember which ones make for the best multi-taskers; a strategy that will serve you well while traveling.
