When Did Crop Tops Become Red Carpet Staples?

The crop top is not going anywhere anytime soon.

It has morphed from a street style staple to a red carpet trend that shows no signs of slowing down. Where once showing skin, especially in the midriff, was unthinkable, the red carpet is now home to the formal crop top. Designers such as Valentino, Azzedine Alaïa and Donna Karan are embracing the crop top trend with embellished and perfectly tailored crop tops that make it on the best dressed list over and over again.

Lizzy Caplan proved that crop tops can be just as elegant as a gown when she walked the Showtime Summer TCA Party in this two-piece Valentino ensemble, with an ornate ankle-length skirt.

However, this summer has seen its slew of stars rocking crop tops on major red carpets, from movie premieres to Cannes Film Festival. Paired with mini skirts, pants and even covered with a leather jacket, crop tops can be dressed up enough for the most formal of events.

While there are rules to wearing a crop top on the red carpet, such as never showing your belly button and keeping your cleavage contained, formal crop tops are having a moment, and we are not complaining.
