Who Is The Man Working To Change Perceptions Of Africa?

“Made in Germany, mastered in Africa.”

Fusing these two influences and expanding on that dynamic is what makes William Chitangala an up-and-comer. OkayAfrica dubbed the young creator “The African King of Pinterest” for his colorfully-rich pinning boards. As the Zambian-born entrepreneur shared his ideas on muses and redefining the Continent, you should know more about the man Google invited to have talk about design thinking.

Supportive of the next generation, Chintangala, a former youth worker at Stadt Diepholz, applies his marketing skills to the Frankfurt, Germany-based company Saint-Germain. The mind behind the #ColoursOfAfrica hashtag gained interest from Pinterest users in different time zones. “Organizing contributions by color — rather than by geography or culture — gave us the opportunity to realign Africa with its diaspora of influences and influencers,” the Africa Youth Prize advisor told OkayAfrica.

“Africa is the ‘indigo-blue’ continent where you can align Miles Davis’ album ‘Kind of Blue’ next to the mathematically-precise, deep blue architectural ornaments of Marrakhesh,” he illustrated to prove his point. In addition to his work at Saint-Germain, William Chitangala is a volunteer marketing officer of Gründermagnet, an umbrella organization of university entrepreneurs in Germany. “We are living in exciting times,” William said. “Our future is bold.”

The pan-African inter-generational movement known as Brand Africa was developed to create, hone, and refine the positive image of Africa. Recognizing the 21st Century, these key drivers of change and competitiveness are shining a light upon the Continent’s reputation amongst individuals, institutions, and sovereign nations.

The organization, which counts William Chitangala as a member, celebrates Africa’s capabilities and achievements. At the end of the day, it all goes back to color for the man whose favorite hue is black. “Colour is a sublime concept. It easily annihilates political and social concepts, such as race, nationality, ideology, and epochs,” Chitangala said. “It’s allowed me to access other perspectives, and view African-related visual stories from different points and angles.”

With other forces attempting to bully its way onto African shores, it is the work of this impressive initiative and William Chitangala helping to write the narrative of Africa by Africa.
