As far as celebrity lifestyle brands go, they pretty much come a dime a dozen. Famous faces from Jessica Alba to the Olsen twins have tried their luck with fashion startups – some facing a not-so-stylish downfall, while others are witnessing a ton of success. Reese Witherspoon happens to be part of the latter.

Nearly months after launching her Southern lifestyle go-to, Draper James, Witherspoon’s new endeavor is still going strong. The actress sat down with Wall Street Journal to discuss the amount of responsibility it takes for a successful startup, as well as some Southern dressing rules.

“There are rules of dressing. You put your clothes and face on like a suit of armor to start the day. You’re always dressed before 10 a.m. We dress to sit on airplanes and to sit at the theater. Nobody wears sweatpants to go to dinner.”

And after taking a quick glance through the lifestyle site, you’ll probably notice that aside from the bright day dresses and striking accessories, one color is definitely lacking: black. When asked why the hue is so obsolete throughout Draper James’ style options, Witherspoon said, “We don’t do black. Our black is navy … It’s just not done. People wear black to funerals. I didn’t wear black at all when I was young and was only allowed to buy my first pair of black pants when I was 15.”

Spoken like a true Southern belle. And while we have to admit that black is a well-known staple throughout fashion closets everywhere (especially ours!), there’s no denying that bright hues and floral prints are equally as popular. Who knows, maybe Witherspoon might be on to something.
