In the last few years, Etsy has embarked on an initiative that has allowed some established designers who sell their goods on their site to be in retail home goods stores like West Elm and Nordstrom. The program Etsy Wholesale has been in beta-testing for the last two years and officially launches today as a matchmaker of sorts for long-established sellers looking to take the next step into retail stores and independent buyers who have searched the site looking for new designers to sell in their stores.

And the program comes at a great time as flushing out which sellers could do wholesale was quite a process of going back and forth through messaging for buyers. Vanessa Bertozzi, a senior program manager at Etsy Wholesale, told Fashionista.com “What we heard from retailers is that it was hard to suss out which sellers were able to do wholesale versus which weren’t. They might find a seller they like, but then [message] back and forth about whether they could do wholesale, and a lot of sellers had no experience.”

To start, both sellers and retailers must apply into the program. One set of criteria for sellers is to show that they have wholesale experience and be able to fulfill minimum orders, but tutorials are available for sellers who want to sell wholesale but don’t know where to start according to an article on Fashionista.com. There’s also a $100 entry fee and Etsy gets 3.5% of all sales.

Not a bad trade-off especially for designers on Etsy looking to make that leap into retail and of course perfect for those of us looking to snag goods from emerging designers in-store.
