Jasmine Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!

My name is Jasmine like the flower. I’m 19 years old, originally from Memphis, TN but currently living Atlanta, GA to attend Spelman College.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I technically transitioned twice. The first time back in 2007. I didn’t even know it had a name. I was just slowly getting my relaxer cut off. Then around 2008 when all my relaxed hair was gone I kept my hair flat ironed and it was just as laid as my relaxer days. However, I didn’t realize how damaged my hair was until 2011. After having a glue in weave I decided I was tired of straight hair so I just stopped straightening it and going to get it done. I then had to spend a year growing out the heat damage, and semi-big chopped in 2012.

Had you always embraced your texture?
Yep, even though the lifeless hair of 2011 looks nothing like the curly kinky lushness it is today.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
My mother wasn’t to fond of my hair in the beginning and my friends would just say I had that hair that didn’t need a perm anyway so they didn’t really care about my decision.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
I would say my hair is a mix of medium strands with coarse and fine ones sprinkled in. Its also medium in density but relatively low on porosity so it just takes forever to dry.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
I would have to say the craziest thing I’ve done is dyed my hair brown, then black, then bleached the ends for the ombre effect.

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
I’d have to say bleaching my hair, since it didn’t fair to well this past winter.

What’s your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
OOOOO WEEE! Product time. My favorite products are SheaMoisture products. Once a week I prepoo with coconut and JBCO for an hour or overnight, then I shampoo in 4 twisted sections with SheaMoisture’s Curl & Shine shampoo (LOVE THIS STUFF). When it comes to rinse out conditioners I have a few I like but currently I’m using the matching Curl & Shine conditioner. I deep condition with SheaMoisture deep treatment masque (STAPLE) and my heat therapy wrap then rinse and wrap my twist in a tshirt for about 10 min. After I remove the shirt I apply the Curl & Style Milk or Thickening Growth Milk (trying to finish) and lightly seal with JBCO/Coconut oil. Once all of that is done I either twist or braid my hair with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
I like 3 strand twist out because they last 4 days without re- twisting. I think my inspiration comes from this site, pintrest and youtube.

Who is your curl crush?
Naptural 85 and random women on Pinterest.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
I just tie a satin scarf around it and sleep on a satin pillow case then fluff it back out the next morning.

How do you maintain healthy length?
Well until this year I wasn’t concerned with length, but now I’m trying to grow my hair out so I have focused more on having nice clean and sealed ends.

What’s the best thing about being natural?
I’m different. Even in a room full of natural ladies no one will have hair exactly like mine.
