Lynette Is Naturally Glam!

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I transitioned for about 5 months and literally woke up one day and just said screw it, I am going to the barber.

About the Journey: I am not one for self-doubt, but I have to admit the thought of going natural at first was scary, intimidating, uncomfortable, unfamiliar and outright not for me. So I thought! One year later I will say that going back to my African roots was one of the BEST decisions I’ve made! No, it’s not easy and certainly not for everyone. I’ve had my share of shrinkage and thoughts of natural hair suicide (going back to perms.) Since I am not quitter, I had to learn to accept me UNALTERED.

Had you always embraced your texture?
After I detoxed my mind from being relaxed for so long, I was able to embrace the essence of who I am and I love my hair texture.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
I do not think my family/friends thought I had it in me to go natural. I guess it’s because I had gone through many hair phases in my life; however, nothing quite like this. My mom jokingly said, are you really going to wear your hair like that? I replied, absolutely it’s the new me.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
To sum it up, I have very coarse 4c hair and I love it. The texture I have now is the texture I had when I was a little girl. My afro, Harriet, (named after Harriet Tubman) is just as healthy and resilient as it was back in the day.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
Bleaching and perming my hair was by far the craziest thing I ever done. Never again; lesson learned!

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
Not going natural sooner.

What’s your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
Harriet loves a good washing, so I co-wash 3 times a week.  All co-washes are done with Shea Moisture and As I am products. I deep condition with Cantu Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque and use at least one oil to lock in the moisture. Once a month, I will do the green house effect for about 3 days.

Staple Oils: Almond oil, coconut oil, black Jamaican castor oil and or wild growth for moisture.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
I am obsessed with protective styles in the winter (box braids, Marley braids, bantu knots, sew-ins, etc.) When I am not wearing protective styles I will use perm rods to give my hair some sort of definition and pick it out to create volume.

Who is your curl crush?
Gosh, I have so many crushes! I am crushing on Taren Guy and Mahogany Curls. Those two are my greatest hair inspiration.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
At night I use my bonnet or silk scarf, depending on the type of hairstyle that I am trying to preserve. NOTHING FANCY!

How do you maintain healthy length?
Water. Moisturizer. Vitamins (biotin). Deep Conditioners. Oils.

What’s the best thing about being natural?
Since I am overly obsessed with FASHION, the best thing about being natural is having the versatility that goes well with what I am wearing.
