On the Couch with Cecelia!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hey Dreamer! Me nombre es Cecelia Banks. I was born and raised in North Carolina; where I reside today. My family is from Monrovia, Liberia and migrated to America at a young age. I am a recent college graduate. I graduated from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a degree in Exercise Sports Science with a concentration in Health Promotion. I am currently employed as a Health Educator/ Tech. I am also a YouTube Vlogger! Check my channel out —-> DreamNcolor

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for most of my life but relaxed my hair my freshman year of high school— big mistake. So right now I am on a new hair journey. I have been on this journey for about 3 years now.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
What motivated me to transition was that I did not know where my hair was going. After relaxing my hair in high school; my hair was healthy for the most part. Being that I did not know how to maintain my hair it started to break off. I decided to cut my hair into a pixie cut. I enjoyed that for a while but I got bored and wanted something different. I went on to wearing hair weaves. My weaves were ON POINT, but once again I got bored with the weaves. I wore weaves for 9-10 months; changing them out etc. During that time I did not perm my hair because I did not want that much stress on my hair. One of the times I took my weave down I decided to cut off all of the perm. I got the inspiration from watching YouTube videos and my peers joining the movement!

How would you describe your hair?
I just found out that my hair is 4A. It is coily in some areas and kinky in others. I have a looser curl pattern around the perimeter of my hair. In the center I have coarse hair. I love every kink and coil my hair has, because it’s mine and no one elses.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love everything about my hair. What I will say is that I love what my hair has done for ME! The CONFIDENCE, ZEAL and SHAMELESSNESS that my hair exudes, moves me every step of the way during this journey.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
What stands out to me from my journey is starting it. Even though I have been natural the majority of my life, me taking the journey back was refreshing. Honestly, it has not been difficult at all! I made my decision to go natural and I am happy that I did.

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos?
I wore weaves when “transitioning.” Currently I do twist outs, braid outs, perm & flexi rod sets. Those were/are my favorites.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Family was used to seeing my natural so I received great comments when I went back natural. People also ask me countless questions about my hair everyday. So there has been great feedback.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My wash days are on Sundays. On this day, I deep condition my hair and either co- wash or shampoo my hair. I shampoo my hair once a month because shampoo dries my hair out.

Who is your hair crush?
I would have to say longhairdontcare2011. May she rest in peace. I really love her hair. It is so full and healthy. I really enjoy her channel and her presence is greatly missed by us naturals.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I love Curly Nikki’s blog spot, The Natural Hair Blog, & you guys of course! On YouTube I would have to say that I like Sistawithrealhair, Glamtwins334, longhairdontcare2011, Chime Edwards. There are so many channels that I love I can’t name them all.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
The name of my YouTube channel is DreamNcolor. I named it that because I feel that everyone of us are dreamers, but who can say that they made their dream a reality, very few. I felt called to awaken people’s motivation and drive to see their dreams become their reality. Harriet Tubman once said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
