Protecting Your Ends- Natural Hair Care Tips

by Precious of PreciousHenshaw.com

The ends of your hair are the oldest part of your hair. They are also the most fragile. They’ve been through the most combing, detangling, manipulating, etc. It is vital to protect your ends to keep them from getting split or damaged, to avoid fairy knots and tiny tangles, and to retain length. Here are some great ways to protect the ends of your hair.

– Covering your hair at night: Wearing a satin scarf or bonnet can keep your hair from rubbing against your pillow, causing split ends and dryness. Having your hair braided or twisted underneath the scarf protects your ends even more.

– Extra moisture on the ends: Applying more moisture to the ends of your hair can keep them from breaking. Since the ends of your hair tend to be the most porous (from all the manipulation they have endured, they tend to have less protective layers, creating “holes” in the hair that makes the ends lose moisture easily), more moisture is needed to keep them from becoming brittle. Be sure to also seal that moisture in with an oil or heavy butter so that the ends keep that moisture in.

– Protective Styling: For those who desire to retain length, wearing protective styles can help protect the ends of the hair. Protective styles keep the hair off of the shoulders, avoiding the rubbing of the hair on the clothing.

– Proper Detangling: Believe it or not, getting rid of the shed hairs (hair that naturally leaves the follicle after its growth cycle is finished) can help protect the ends of your hair. How? When shed hairs aren’t removed, they can mingle with the hair still connected to your head, causing tangles and fairy knots – the single strand knots you see sometimes at the ends of your hair. Tangles and knots at the ends of your hair can weaken it, causing breakage. Therefore, detangle your hair often to keep out the tangles and remove shed hairs.

– Combing carefully: Always comb with a wide-toothed comb to detangle. The closer together the teeth of the comb are, the more the comb can catch onto small tangles in your hair, and the more breakage it causes. Those of us with tightly curled hair should comb when the hair is wet. That way, the comb can more easily slide through the hair strands. Always begin combing from the ends of your hair up so that you get rid of the tangles bit by bit as you go up.
