Tania is Naturally Glam!

My name is Tania Williams, I am 27 years old from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I currently reside in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am mixed, due to my mother being from Puerto Rico. I do speak the spanish language fluently, which everyone always seems to be amazed when I tell them that. I have a beautiful little girl name Lyric, she is three years old. Growing up my hair was always manageable, I was just too lazy to let my mother do it. So I got a relaxer in middle school.  Throughout the years I never thought about going natural until I graduated from college in 2007. It was 2008 when I finally started my hair journey with a dear friend of mine named Yanicka.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for four years now. My nappy anniversary just passed! I am so excited for how much my hair has changed and grown throughout these years.

What motivated you to go natural? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I was a transitioner. I transitioned for about nine months. What motivated me was really my friend Yanicka. We both motivated each other. We both felt the same way about each other’s hair, and how it was harmful to use all of those chemicals every time we had some new growth.  The heat was damaging as well. I can remember the smell of the flat irons from it being so hot and just burning my hair away!! On May 21st of 2009, we finally decided to cut each other’s hair off!! It brought tears to our eyes! We couldn’t believe that we actually did it. It was over and we were finally natural!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
My most memorable part of my hair journey was cutting off my relaxed ends. As soon as my relaxed ends were off my hair felt so free and a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was so happy that I actually did it. I never thought I would be a natural. It was hard to do it. I wanted to perm my hair so bad from seeing all the new growth I had. I just kept telling myself that my hair will be much healthier and it will grow past my shoulders!

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
During my transition I wore my hair in a bun most of the times. When I finally became natural, I loved wearing my hair out! I love twist outs, and I love high buns.

Any memorable reactions from family or others?
My experiences from going natural wasn’t really a shock to any one. My family and friends were all very supportive and couldn’t wait to see how my hair was going to turn out. I was nervous when my hair was short, I really didn’t feel pretty. I bought big earring just so I could feel somewhat girly.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I co wash my hair every three to four days since I just colored my hair a few months back. At times I will be lazy and it will last a week before I finally wash it. I only use conditioner when I wash, and shampoo once a month. I dry my hair with a t-shirt only. When it comes to detangling I only use my fingers. I do have a wide comb just in case in my drawer. I use a leave in conditioner in my hair , my styler and my coconut oil.

My products that I use: Conditioner – Pantene Co-wash cleasing conditioner, Shea moisture Restorative conditioner. Leave in conditioner- AG moisture and shine fast food leave in conditioner, Giovanni Deeper moisture conditioner. Styling- Shea Moisture Curl enhancing smoothie. Oils- Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, and Olive oil. Gel- Eco styler gel Argan oil, clear gel, and the Olive oil gel all from Eco styler.

Night time routine- The famous pineapple with my satin hair cap.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?
My favorite hair website is Curly Nikki. I been watching her website since I was transitioning. My favorite You tuber’s- Mahoganycurls, Shameless Maya, Charmsie, just to name a few.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
I know it can be very challenging and rough to go natural. The main and important key is to have patience. You can go very far with what you want to accomplish in life. Becoming natural was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I love how versatile my hair is and all the different hair styles that I can do and never get bored of.
