Tranita is Naturally Glam!

My name is Tranita Excellent. I’m a graduating senior majoring in Psychology at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University from Lakeland Florida. I and a friend (Jalyssia Williams) started a YouTube page called UsNaturalGirls and later made an Instagram and Facebook page.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 23 months.

What motivated you to transition?
Jalyssia had begun to transition and was telling me I should and I was like “noooo way” lol. Then I saw a video by Chime Edwards (HairCrush) on YouTube where she discussed growth potential and I was hooked. My initial goal was to grow long hair and believe it or not, relax it again when it got longer. I will never do that now. Once I chopped, my entire mindset had changed. I love my hair and my body and I don’t want to be 80 years old with thinning hair due to chemicals.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I transitioned all of maybe 3 months. I couldn’t handle the two textures. I big chopped (see video) Saturday January 14, 2012. My last relaxer was September 20, 2011. I didn’t decide to actually transition to be natural and stop using heat until November 5 after doing a braid-out.

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is miraculous and eye catching in its natural state because of all of my coils, but it is also more of a handful because of them. She is fierce when I stretch her out to rock my fro. Thelma is what I call my fro. Lol.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love that it is me and I don’t have to hide it or be ashamed of it. I love how much more healthier and longer it is since I decided to chop it off and be me. I also love the SHRINKAGE! Sometimes… Most of the time lol

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
Most memorable had to be my big chop. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it hasn’t been hard. It just is. I view it as the only way. I have no other option but to work with it so I make the best of it. No relaxer over here! I only tried heat once. I used the blow dryer on low heat doing the tension method and I’ve never done it again. I am skeptical about getting it straightened :). Don’t want heat damage. I trim my own ends btw (naptural85 has a great tutorial)

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
Pin curls and braid outs! This was actually the day I decided to transition.
Current dues… My Afro of course lol but other than that… My yarn twists. I wear them for less than 3 weeks because I miss my hair.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Mostly positivity. An uncle told me to comb it. He was expecting me to fro it and not where my coils lol. I get naturals, transitioners and skeptics complimenting me all the time. The white folk stare the most though. Oh, and this one white guy on campus… He loves it. Wants to touch it and makes sure to compliment me every time he sees me lol. My current boyfriend loves it… A lot! Lol

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
It’s been nearly two years… I don’t have one! I do try to be consistent with the curly girl method detangling at least once a week if I wear my hair in its natural state. I went about 3 weeks once without finger detangling and it was devastating. Since it’s winter I can’t wet my hair every morning to maintain the wash n go style using the CG Method so I wear it stretched. I slack at washing and DCing.

My favorite products are Taliah Waajid Curl sealer and curling cream, AsIAm coconut Cowash, EVCO, water, treseme naturals conditioner, the Denman brush, many essential oils, castor oil EVOO and my trusty bonnet and satin pillow case. I get my oils from http://www.iherb.com/mypage/tranita.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Curly Nikki, YouTube: Naptural85, MahoganyCurls, MahoganyKnots, HairCrush, AfricanExport etc. there are just so many.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
You look good! As long as you walk with confidence no one can tell you any different. If they see the slightest hint of disbelief in your walk they will use it to their advantage and try to destroy you (bring you down). Don’t let them. Love yourself and the way you were created. If not for yourself, do it for your future… Your children.
