On Thursday Katya Leonovich presented Bisected Beauty, her 8th collection for New York Fashion Week at the Highline Loft. A diverse selection of models stood with stoic expressions in front of paintings that ironically resembled their garments as guests sipped vodka infused drinks.

The inspiration for the Spring/Summer 2016 collection comes from the female experience of those parts of our being which we want to hide, and those which we want to expose. “Every woman possesses an internal bisection,” notes from the show explained. “The characteristics we strive to maintain, and those which we keep locked away; the sinner and the saint, the opposite sides of the spectrum that regardless of how they are depicted, will always remain parallel. Bisected Beauty is a revelation of the beauty we hold true to our being, and that which we create.”

Are we the only ones who quietly live for the way designers describe the female experience?

Luxe fabrics were featured throughout the collection of gowns. White leather and charmeuse played nicely together on a screen-printed dress. A neoprene dress is rimmed in fox fur, but the gown that stole the show was a floor length crinkled chiffon and silk tulle ball gown. Leonovich really explored a unique use of materials as a double face shearling and leather dress with hand painted newspaper print cotton was featured alongside a corset dress in printed charmeuse and rustic linen gauze.

The collocation of fabrics both hard and soft reflects the designer’s belief in the duality of woman, something we can all attest to having experienced.
