Oops: Selfie With Stolen iPhone Leads to Man’s Arrest

Jess Ewald was arrested for grand theft after the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office posted a picture the thief took of himself to its Facebook and Twitter pages last week, officials said. “Do you recognize the #Selfie of this suspected thief?” the sheriff’s office wrote on its Facebook page.

Authorities said the suspect stole the phone from a worker at Benny’s on the Beach in Lake Worth, just south of West Palm Beach, between 10 p.m. and midnight. The woman who owned the phone didn’t realize it was gone until the end of her shift.

“The suspect apparently took a great quality ‘Selfie’ using the victim’s stolen phone,” the sheriff’s office wrote on its post. “Not only is this the male who stole her phone, but she remembers him with a group of his friends at Benny’s.”

The picture went into the victim’s account and handed it over to investigators. Authorities said Ewald surrendered to police after the selfie garnered an overwhelming response on social media.
