Braces Don’t Have To Limit Your Lipstick Options

Braces, with a poor attitude, can be a big hit to one’s self esteem. While the options have certainly improved over the past two decades, they still are very apparent in some styles.

And for those of you starting college, a new job or just sick of being intimidated by the supportive device, we say loosen up!

There are plenty of ways to rock braces with or without makeup. In fact, there are certain products and shades the will lift one’s look and accentuate the positive. We asked celebrity makeup artist Frank Guyton and personal makeup artist Shayzon Prince for their simple advice on the subject.

See what they had to say below and on the next page.

On a common misconception about braces:
Frank: “Women that are in transition of wearing braces [often thing that] their smile isn’t pretty. This is a total misconception and untruth. When we smile it increases our face value. When we smile we exude happiness and love. So ladies with braces keep sharing your smiles no matter what!”

On a go-to lip stain: “When it comes to women who wear braces, I highly recommend non-drying lip stains like Jay Manuel Beauty’s Smile Lip Stain, which a portion of the proceeds go towards ‘Operation Smile’ for children who are born with a cleft lip to have the proper surgery so they can have a smile. Or one can use a matte lip stick. These kind of formulations don’t move like a lipstick would. Nars has a great variety of matte lipsticks as well.”

On the beauty benefit of braces: “When you’re done wearing them your teeth are gonna be straight and you’ll be more inclined to smile and show your personality through smiling. One way to accentuate your braces is to create balance with the areas on the face where you are applying your makeup. If you’re self conscious about your braces draw more attention to your eyes with makeup application. Bold lashes or liquid eye liner or eyeshadows can bring the attention up from the mouth to the eyes. For the women who embrace their braces use fun colors in lip stains and matte lipsticks.”
