Carolina Herrera on Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian’s Naked Met Gala Gowns: There Should Be a Little Mystery

The theme at this year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala was China: Through the Looking Glass, but some of the night’s biggest stars followed a different dress code: Show as much skin as possible. And iconic designer Carolina Herrera found some of the looks to be in poor taste.

“They’re supposed to be fashion icons — and they’re not wearing anything. It’s an obsession now,” the designer told Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan about Met Gala gowns seen on stars like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian West and Jennifer Lopez, who all skipped their undergarments on the red carpet in super sheer skin-baring designs.

Herrera explains that some designers think “it’s so modern to be naked or almost naked.”

“They think it’s going to attract younger people if they do those dresses. No!” she continued. “The almost naked! Oh God! They’re trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery.”

The designer maintains that she likes a little skin-baring, but knows how important it is to create a plunging neckline that flatters the chest. “If it’s open so much, the [breasts] look like fried eggs. Fashion is about proportion.”

Herrera dressed Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi for the Met Gala in a custom ivory mikado gown that honored traditional Chinese fashion.

“With all the Met’s splendor, you must have a wonderful gown to make a big entrance,” she told Vogue at the time.
