When it comes to a luxurious spa treatment, CVS is probably the last place you think of. Au contraire; you may want to reconsider that premature stream of beauty consciousness. As it turns out, treating your skin outside the normal cleansing routine is actually necessary if you want to maintain clear pores and an inner glow that even the strongest highlighter can’t emulate.

“Facial masks are similar to booster treatments – they are designed to target specific concerns for the skin,” says Melody Rubin, Senior Manager of Area Beauty Service for CVS Health.

“Options you will find that can be perfect partners in any skin care regimen when used 1-2 times a week are: hydrating, purifying/detoxifying, brightening and anti-aging and anti-inflammatory for the most sensitive skin. Whether the skin type is dry, normal/combination or oily/acne prone, each type of mask is designed to fit and address that concern.”

For those who don’t have the time or budget for an hour long chemical peel or body treatment, your local drugstore carries single use Beauty360 facial masks ($4.99), the perfect mid-week pick me up for tired eyes and dry skin. As someone who rarely uses face masks, I had no idea what to expect, but I quickly discovered two things:

1. Tissue masks are scary looking. See below:

2. You’ll always want to wear it longer than the suggested 5-10 minutes because it feels amazing. The cooling sensation makes going to sleep easier.

If your skin is on the drier side, Rubin recommends a gentle exfoliator and mask once a week while oily/acne prone types should exfoliate and apply masks twice a week. Any and every skin type can benefit specifically from the The Hydrating Cool Calming Clay Facial Mask, which features a creamy clay texture to comfort the skin and is formulated with aloe vera to combat dehydration and rose water for a tighter, toned complexion.

Also, with seasonal changes in full swing, switching out some of your daily products is imperative. For instance, if you’re using a gel moisturizer, consider transitioning to a heavier lotion or cream to combat the winter chill. As far as makeup is concerned, Rubin also suggests trading in your bronzer for illuminators, which focus on the glowing of the skin (i.e. “strobing”).

“Skin prep in the evening is just as important as it is in the morning to create the best base for makeup. The proper evening routine is to use makeup remover, cleanser, toner, face serum or oil, facial moisturizer and eye crème,” says Rubin. “The proper routine every morning is to cleanse, tone, apply face serum, moisturize, apply eye crème and sunscreen. Many people tend to skip sunscreen in the morning – the harsh reality is that no matter if it’s summer or winter, rain or shine, our skin even through our makeup is damaged and affected by UVA rays which can cause skin disease and cancer.”

As for the drugstore makeup you should be coveting, Rubin gave us a short list of some top selling products at CVS in September They include mostly BB/CC creams, SPF moisturizers:
