John Mayer Admits To Being A ‘Recovered Ego Addict’

John Mayer just gave one of the most authentic, soul-baring interviews we’ve ever seen from a celebrity. The singer appears extremely self aware and down to earth in a recent interview with MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow. Mayer addresses his ego-driven past, the sickness that comes from fame, and even his ex, Taylor Swift.

Farrow jokes by the end of the interview that it felt like a therapy session, and we definitely agree. It was a completely cathartic.

What Mayer points out about fame, we can’t help but to tie it back to the overlaying theme from Birdman. Mayer explains that 2% of the music industry that holds 80% of the media’s attention and makes the comparison of, if both he and Kanye West were to save a baby from a burning building, it would be Kanye who gets coverage. This rings similar to Michael Keaton’s character in Birdman who insecurely describes his fear that when experiencing terrible turbulence on a plane, in which George Clooney was also on, the front page would mourn Clooney over him. After we saw a fictional character who is meant to portray the sickness that can arise from fame in the industry, it’s refreshing to hear an actual celebrity coherently acknowledge that he shouldn’t fall down that rabbit hole.

He’s not sour about not being in the 2% though. In reference to Taylor Swift, he believes that it’s great that they can speak on the behalf of thousands of other musicians who may not have the platform.

See the entire interview above, it’s definitely worth the watch.
