Demi Lovato Poses Nude, Makeup-Free Because ‘It’s Empowering’: ‘You Can Overcome Body-Image Issues’

Demi Lovato is baring it all in the name of body-positivity.
The singer, whose upcoming album Confident drops Oct. 16, posed for a nude, makeup-free and un-retouched photo shoot for Vanity Fair earlier this week. Devastated by the recent loss of her great-grandfather, Lovato, 23, told the publication she was inspired to live in the moment.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short,” she told VF photographer Patrick Ecclesine before the spontaneous shoot at her New York hotel.
“I’m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am. How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a f—, and this is who I am,” she added to the photographer. “I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free. What if we do a photo shoot where it’s totally raw? Super-sexy, but no makeup, no fancy lighting, no retouching, and no clothing. Let’s do it here, let’s do it now.”
“It’s empowering, and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body-image issues, and you can feel comfortable and confident in your skin.”
The “Cool for the Summer” singer opened up to PEOPLE last month about her inspiring new self-acceptance.
“It’s extremely important for me to even embrace my body and my sexuality with showing more skin – I think it’s great,” Lovato told PEOPLE at the Samsung Hope for Children gala.
“I went from being in a place where I was suffering from an eating disorder and hating every single inch of my body to now baring my legs and showing more skin in front of the whole world and being proud of my body instead of loathing it,” she added at the time.
