Emmys 2015: Lady Gaga Goes Understated in a Simple Black Gown, Surprises Everyone

Lady Gaga‘s red carpet dresses usually end up immortalized with Internet memes. But not this time. No meat dress. No red leather gloves. Gaga went totally classic glam at the Emmy Awards in a sleek one-shoulder gown. (She even left her colorful wigs at home!) See the look from all angles below.

The inspiration? According to her stylist and the designer of her dress, Brandon Maxwell, Gaga channeled Grace Kelly.

“Here we have my friend, my muse, my Grace Kelly @ladygaga wearing #brandonmaxwell SS 16 and @lorraineschwartz jewelry at the Primetime Emmy Awards,” he captioned a photo of the star on Instagram. “You look beautiful, you smart, talented woman.”

Gaga also went soft with her beauty look, courtesy makeup artist Sarah Nicole Tanno for Marc Jacobs Beauty.

“This was Lady Gaga’s first time at the Emmys so we wanted her look to feel very classic,” Tanno told People Style exclusively of the star’s makeup moment. “The final look was fresh but sexy and subtle yet glamorous.”

And the “classic, fresh and effortless” look only took 20 minutes.

“Gaga always chooses one bold statement in her red carpet makeup looks,” Tanno shared. “Her Brandon Maxwell dress for the Emmys has such a beautiful silhouette that we chose a chic and classic makeup look that didn’t distract from the dress. Her overall makeup look was very soft, which is something we rarely do.”

“It’s all about the blending,” Tanno advised. “There should be no hard lines.”

Tanno used Marc Jacobs Beauty Twinkle Pop Eye Stick in Three Shakes 404, a milk chocolate shimmer shade, which she softly blended on her eyelid for a light bronze, smoky eye look. To define the bride-to-be’s eyes even more, she went with the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Brown(Out) 54.

“These products blend so easily so the makeup look was quick and effortless,” she said. “The rest of her makeup look was very soft so we focused on light washes of color. You can definitely achieve this makeup look at home in 20 minutes (or less).”

Gaga’s mane man for the night, Frederic Aspiras, styled the star using Matrix products. He was also inspired by “Grace Kelly’s effortless elegance” and “wanted to creates something soft and touchable.”

To create the look, Aspiras used Matrix StyleLink Volume Builder Volume Mousse on Gaga’s towel-dried hair from roots to ends and combed in Matrix’s StyleLink Smooth Setter Smoothing Cream with a pump of the brand’s StyleLink Gloss Booster. Then she was set for her blowout.

“Sounds like a lot of products but trust me every product is super lightweight and the results give you smooth, soft and shiny locks,” he said.

To set the look, he used Matrix StyleLink Shape Switcher Molding Paste to mold hair in place and create waves and shapes.

“I chose to push the hair off the face and create waves that went back,” he said, “in order to maintain the softness and movement of the hair.”
