‘Ethnic Meets Couture’ on Yuma Koshino’s Spring/Summer 2016 Runway

Yuma Koshino’s Spring/Summer 2016 presentation shown during Tokyo Fashion Week can be summarized in one word: juxtaposition. The collection was presented under the theme “Ethnic Meets Couture”, with the designer specifically stating Mexico as a source of aesthetic influence. While Mexico was not immediately apparent to me, Koshino’s collection established her theme of contrast from her first look. Variations in color, textile and proportions were seen throughout the collection––whether it was in the shimmering metallics paired with ladylike tweeds or voluminous cropped jackets worn with tailored a-line dresses. Any viewer that was expecting to pigeonhole this collection will have found themselves struggling with the many unexpected pairings in each of Koshino’s outfits in the best way possible.

Mixed textiles, transformed garments and harmoniously clashing prints and colors made for an unexpectedly cohesive collection. Crowd favorites include the skirt-pants hybrids, a heavy tweed coat and the multi-paneled skirts. If there were any rules present in Koshino’s collection, it was this: expect the unexpected.
