Nike, Levi’s Take White House Pledge To Fight Climate Change

More than 68 new companies have taken the “American Business Act on Climate Pledge” launched in July, including Nike, Levi Strauss & Co., Target Corp., and L’Oreal USA. In total more than 80 businesses, including Walmart, Procter & Gamble and Walt Disney Co., that employ more than 9 million people have signed the pledge, according to WWD. As part of the pledge, the companies have promised to take steps to reduce their emissions, increase use of clean energy and “engage in conservation activities.”

Levis Strauss has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020, and also pledging to stop using forest-based materials from endangered forests by 2020. Nike is “pledging to reach 100 percent renewable energy in their owned or operated facilities by 2025, and is also with the MIT Climate CoLab to find “new ideas for engaging industries, designers and consumers in valuing, demanding and adopting low-impact materials.”

The pledge, and commitments from U.S. businesses, is all part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan to cut nearly 6 billion tons of carbon pollution through 2030, which is equal to taking all the cars in the United States off the road for more than four years.

This is just the latest move by the fashion industry to combat waste and global warming. Models and designers recently teamed up for the Save The Arctic campaign with Greenpeace, and celebs are also taking the Green Carpet Challenge inspired by the fashion documentary “True Cost.”
