Fashion & Games: Chanel’s Cruise 2015 Twister-Themed Runway Show

All eyes might have been on the Met Gala red carpet, but Karl Lagerfeld was having his own fashion show halfway across the world.

For the Chanel Cruise 2015 collection, Lagerfeld, along with Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton and Gisele Bundchen, headed to Seoul to sit front row at the designer’s latest showcase. However, continuing in the fun themes of past Chanel shows, including a grocery store and Parisian cafe, Lagerfeld had his models walking down a Twister-themed runway.

As to why Lagerfeld chose South Korea as the location of his latest runway, in an interview with WWD he said, “I think people don’t know so much about it. They know everything about China and Japan, but I think they don’t know so much about [South] Korea. I thought it was a good idea. I don’t do folklore or direct interpretation. It’s an idea of what I think it could be – or should be.”

Color circles of red, green blue and yellow adorned the runway, evoking images of one of our favorite childhood board games, and had us wishing the models would jump into an impromptu game while Lagerfeld held the spinner.

Alas, while the theme was fun and games, the show was all business. Models, including Lagerfeld’s youngest must Hudson Kroenig, wore rainbow bright ensembles, Princess Leia-esque buns and floral adorned pieces we wish we could rock at the beach.

Inspired by hanboks, which are the Korean versions of kimonos, you saw the influence in several pieces in the collection, including the soft pink dress that closed the show. Just like the K-pop stars that were mixed in his front row, the collection was definitely Chanel with a Korean twist.

So while all eyes were on the Met Gala, Karl Lagerfeld was proving why he is the most influential man in fashion.
