Hervé Léger Exec: ‘Voluptuous’ Women and Lesbians Shouldn’t Wear the Brand

Hervé Léger’s bandage dresses are a mainstay on major red carpets (and late-night clubs, of course), but one of the brand’s designers revealed he doesn’t want just anyone donning his designs — and he got pretty candid about it in a bizarre interview that managed to offend on multiple levels.

Patrick Couderc, the Managing Director of Hervé Léger in London, said in a The Mail on Sunday interview that “voluptuous” women or women with “very prominent hips and a very flat chest” should not wear his dresses.

Also on his “no” list? “If you’re a committed lesbian and you are wearing trousers all your life, you won’t want to buy a Leger dress. Lesbians would want to be rather butch and leisurely.”

And Couderc throws ageism into the mix as well. “What you’re not noticing is that your cleavage is about two inches too low because you are 55 and it’s time that you should not display everything like you’re 23,” he said.

He even is resistant of celebs who “lack sufficient class” from being spotted in the brand and refuses to send them any free dresses.

After reading the controversial statements, comedian Margaret Cho voiced her opposition on Twitter urging a boycott of the brand with the hashtag “#boycottherveleger.”

She even recounts a shopping trip she had years ago saying, “I remember being in a shop in the 90s called ‘horn’ and a dress being PULLED from my hands — they said THAT’S TOO SMALL YOU’LL RIP IT.”

In a statement released today, the owners of Herve Leger, BCBGMAXAZRIA Group, said Couderc is not an authorized spokesperson and works for the British distributor, MJH Fashion. The brand called his statements “shocking” and “appalling.”
