How Did She Do It!? Kate Looks More Glamorous Than Ever Less Than 12 Hours After Giving Birth

With news that Princess Kate and Prince William had welcomed a girl, oddsmakers everywhere moved on to frantically guessing what the name might be. But we had bets placed on something different: What Kate might wear to introduce her second born to the world. After making such a memorable impression with the blue polka-dot Jenny Packham she wore after George’s birth, we knew Kate wouldn’t disappoint — and in yellow-and-white floral shift dress (also a custom Jenny Packham), she certainly didn’t.

The royal mom selected a chic knee-grazing design spotted with yellow buttercups in an ombré design that faded to yellow. She accessorized the look with nude pumps and her signature bouncy blowout, courtesy of her mane master, Amanda Cook Tucker, who also did her tresses after Prince George’s arrival. (Tucker reportedly charges $454 a day.)

As for her footwear, the stylish royal proved she really is a superhuman, gliding down the steps in a pair of nude, round-toe  Jimmy Choo “Gilbert” pumps, boasting a 3.3-inch heel height.

A few weeks earlier, Kate stepped out in two pink coats that had royal watchers speculating she was dropping hints about the baby’s gender. But close observers would note that she wore just as much blue, purple and brown throughout her stylish pregnancy as pink.

That didn’t stop us from guessing about what she might wear in the case of a boy or a girl. Editors handicapped their top choices (from a recycled Seraphine dress to a brand-new floral number) and British style experts weighed in with their picks.

But ultimately, everyone agreed that Kate’s smart and meaningful style choices — like choosing a dress that showed off her post-pregnancy shape after her first baby — would prevail again. “I think she knew how much that meant to everybody and I hope it happens again,” maternity designer Rosie Pope told PEOPLE about the Princess’s big reveal last time. And the one prediction that no one would have bet against? A fabulous Kate hair moment — which she delivered in full.
