Despite efforts from a few organizations, scary skinny models on the runway remain a prevalent issue.

Fortunately, fashion capitals Spain, Israel and Italy have convinced another to outlaw unhealthy standards with legislation. Earlier today, the French Parliament announced a new law that requires models to have a BMI of at least 18 before going to work; or at least 121 pounds for anyone who is 5’7.

“The activity of model is banned for any person whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is lower than levels proposed by health authorities and decreed by the ministers of health and labor,” reads the fine print.

Additionally, models are required to undergo regular medical checks before and after a job, ensuring that they’re maintaining a healthy lifestyle off the clock. In the case that he/she doesn’t meet these requirements, their employer–whether it be a designer or agency– will be subject to a 75,000 euros ($81,152) fine and up to six months in jail.

“It’s important for fashion models to say that they need to eat well and take care of their health, especially for young women who look to the models as an aesthetic ideal,” said French Health Minister Marisol Touraine while discussing the law’s significance last month.

As expected, a lot of questions have been raised about the legislation, including models traveling from outside countries and those who are naturally slender with fast metabolism.
