John Galliano Gives An Update On His Sobriety

John Galliano

It’s been four years since John Galliano famously crashed and burned. He cracked and was taped spewing anti-Semitic vitriol in a Paris bar. It was headline news, it was appalling and it cost him his job and his reputation, a story that was most comprehensively told in the recently released Gods and Kings book by Dana Thomas.

In the book and in most every place the story was reported, the blame was passed on drugs. The designer said and it was recounted that drugs were the coping mechanism for such a heavy workload. So now, with the designer back in action, helming the brand of Margiela, one has to wonder just how is he coping. Are the drugs back? What’s the story?

“I’ve never done this sober before,” Galliano said to Hamish Bowles in a feature on the designer as he was working on his debut collection for Maison Margiela. “I have to keep reminding that it’s actually quite normal. It’s actually quite nice, John.”

The feature which was touted in some ways as sort of a tell-all about how the designer is coping sort os skimps on the details, prone to the beautifully descriptive, but frankly flowery language that Bowles is known for. The bottom line? Galliano is taking a more hands on, upstart approach to his design tasks now than was done at Dior and as a result is allowing himself to cop through that.

It was largely reported that once he was at Givenchy, Galliano rarely touched the designs, only sketching and/or giving critiques and allowing Stephen Robinson, Bill Gayten or someone else in the atelier to make the corrections. From this account, the new Galliano is actually involved in the process of making the pieces within his hands, pulling himself back into the creative process. And through that, is how he’s found his salvation.
