Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Garner– all recognizable names in Hollywood and all 2014 Elle Women in Hollywood. The annual issue honoring women making strides in the male-dominated industry will be out for November. But the dotcom teased images and quotes from the ladies that really had us talking.

The interviewer must have asked the ladies to be frank as possible, because they did not hold back. From marriage and kids, to career highs and lows, they let it all out. We also saw newcomers Gugu Mbatha-Raw (below) and Brie Lawson, who coincidentally (or not) posed in all Calvin Klein.

See some of the more poignant quotes below.

Elizabeth Banks on comparing her career to women: “I don’t compare my career to other women’s; I compare my career to men’s. Why would I compare my career to the women’s? They’re not making as much money. And they don’t get to work as much. So I compare myself to Paul Rudd. He’s gotten way more opportunities than I have.”

Jennifer Garner on continuing to work: “My ambition shifted when I had kids in a way that I didn’t anticipate. I became more ambitious for my life as a whole, and for that kind of health and happiness of the overall family unit. And that very much includes my husband and very much includes me. My husband is always the one saying to me, ‘You have to work, you have to work. This is part of who you are. We’ll figure it out.’ That’s powerful, when your partner has that serious mantra.”

Zoe Saldana on playing Nina Simone: “I actually encouraged Cynthia to cast someone else. But she came to me and said that everybody was afraid, and I thought, Shit, then how can we complain that there aren’t enough films about African-American iconic figures?”

You can pick up the issue on newsstands Oct 21 and read more here.
