Kelly Ripa Has Blue Hair Now: ‘My Sons Think I Look like a Superhero!’

She’s blue for the summer! Just a few weeks after retiring her pink locks and returning to blonde, Kelly Ripa has debuted an even bolder bob.

Whereas her first hairstyle was all about light pink excitement (“For the love of pink!”), she took more of a ‘tude with this new one, a vivid bright teal that also came courtesy of Sally Hershberger Downtown stylist Ryan Trygstad. “Shady’s back, tell a friend,” she captioned her teaser shot.

And lest you worry for the state of Ripa’s frequently-tinted locks, let Trygstad reassure you hat she has the “healthiest hair in the world” on his own late-night post. His inspiration for the “superhero blue” shade (which actually is a layered mix of five custom blues from teal to midnight)? “Pinterest!” he tells PEOPLE.  “We love looking for inspiration on there.”

On Live With Kelly and Michael Thursday morning, Ripa showed off the new do in a tight white dress. “What’s sad is I get two shampoos and it’s back to normal,” she said. “This took almost five hours. I wanted to try blue because I wanted to try pink and I really liked it. I wanted to try red and he said, ‘Why don’t we do another shocker?’ We dyed it blue and it turned a lime green … and Mark walks upstairs and he’s like [deep breath]. He’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, you look like the Lucky Charms guy.’”

Once she got to her ideal color, she took a poll of the room. “My sons love it, they think I look like a superhero. I call it Patience Woman, because I have nothing but patience,” she jokes. “Mark — I was like, ‘What do you think?’ — and he was like, ‘I like the cut!’ He doesn’t like outrageous hair color, but I don’t care. I’m like, ‘I’m your new wife, Blueberry.’”

Because of Ripa’s “strongest, healthiest Italian hair,” Trygstad says he has to take extra steps to keep the blue vivid. “I’m actually going to make her a custom conditioner with some of the blue in it (so she can apply a little in her shower with gloves) to help maintain and keep the color bright,” he says — or else she’ll be back to blonde in no time. 

Any hints to what’s next? Says Trygstad, “I never know until the day of when I get her text — it’s all her, I just do what she says! But I think eventually she’ll go grey. We’ll see!”
