Look of the Week: Holland Roden’s Vampy Lip at the L.A. Premiere of She’s Funny That Way

Relative newcomer Holland Roden is definitely one to watch on the red carpet — she rarely gets it wrong. The Teen Wolf star stepped out most recently for her new project, She’s Funny That Way, wearing one of the vampiest lip hues we’ve ever seen — in the dead of summer. And you know what? It totally worked. Since we’re still gaga over her statement lip, we reached out to the star’s makeup artist, Elle Leary, for all the details on Roden’s off-season pout so we, too, could break out our own wine-colored lipstick for a surprising summer look.

Leary says she was so inspired by Roden’s “vampy-mod” Self Portrait midi that she had to incorporate the bold hue into the actress’s makeup for an equally stunning statement moment. But a dark lip in summer? Turns out stepping outside of the box fits Roden’s red carpet M.O. to a T.

“Holland is a trendsetter and breaks the rules all the time,” she tells PEOPLE. “I’m always looking for opportunities to push the envelope, and I felt with her skin having that summer glow, we could go for [a bold color] with the lip since fall is around the corner.”

Leary used not one, but two hues to perfect Roden’s pout. She first lined the star’s lips with Votre Vu Drawmatic Lip Liner in Sizzle and then contoured her pout by darkening the corners of Roden’s mouth with the liner. For the main event, the makeup pro swiped on Temptu’s Color True Lipstick in Jet Rogue all over her lips, and as a final step (and to create that lacquered look), Leary added a touch of Becca’s Under-Eye Brightening Corrector to the middle of Roden’s lips.

So what did the red-carpet risk-taker think of the final look? “She loved it,” Leary says. “We both were like, ‘This is stunning!’”
