Look of the Week: Kate Mara at the Fantastic Four Premiere

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

Looking especially Fantastic this week (sorry, we had to): Kate Mara, who has has been working overtime to promote her latest film, Fantastic Four, in a series of mod minis teamed with some equally major beauty moments. And for the N.Y.C. premiere of the comic book-inspired movie, the actress paired a black leather Valentino number with an eye-catching bold lip and a subtle-yet-sexy smoky eye (to go with her cute new pixie). Mara’s makeup artist for more than a decade, Coleen Campbell-Olwell, gave us the exclusive details on the fun look, below!

“The inspiration behind Kate’s look had a little ’90s feel to it,” Campbell-Olwell tells PEOPLE. “I love the look from that era — a strong lip, beautiful skin, a subtle eye and, of course, a strong brow.”

So to nail that retro beauty moment, the makeup pro says she began by brightening and smoothing Mara’s complexion with Kate Somerville IllumiKate CC Cream in Light and added a slight shimmer to her cheekbones by lightly tapping on Giorgio Armani Beauty Fluid Sheer in No. 2 to create a fresh-faced glow and to play up the star’s short crop.

“I just love Kate’s new pixie haircut,” she says of the star’s recent makeover. “I feel she can wear any style, but I am loving this cut by Mara Roszak. I feel that it really emphasizes her gorgeous cheekbones, so I had fun playing that up.”

Campbell-Olwell played up Mara’s eyes with a little shine, creating a look she describes as “modern with a touch of color,” using a shimmery copper shadow (Dior’s Diorshow Fusion Mono in Meteore) that she blended on the actress’s top lid above the crease and on the lower lash lines. For a pop of color (and to create dimension), Campbell-Olwell added a green hue (Diorshow Fusion Mono in Millennium) to the outer part of Mara’s top lid and the outside of her bottom line.

To finish the “soft, not harsh” smoky eye, the pro lined Sephora Waterproof Contour Eye Pencil in Go For a Ride along the outer, top and bottom lash line and smoked it out by smudging it into the eye shadows.

And as for the actress’s “bold but wearable” lip, Campbell-Olwell swiped on a deep berry shade (Make up For Ever in Satin Blackcurrant), which Mara helped picked out. The pro added a bit of “warmth and dimension” by lightly lining Mara’s lips with M.A.C Cosmetics Lip Pencil in Mahogany for a perfectly action hero-appropriate pout.
