Look of the Week: Natalie Dormer’s Romantic Hair and Makeup Moment from Mockingjay Part 2’s L.A. Premiere

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 opens in theaters today, and to celebrate, we’re highlighting one of our favorite beauty looks from the film’s worldwide, weeks-long press tour: Natalie Dormer’s shimmery romantic eye makeup and sophisticated textured updo for its L.A. premiere. We reached out to the actress’ glam squad — makeup artist Matthew VanLeeuwen and hairstylist Giannandrea — for all the details on the star’s “understated elegant” look.

Inspired by Dormer’s strapless embellished Vivienne Westwood gown, VanLeeuwen and Giannandrea decided together to keep the star’s beauty look fresh and simple to let the dress speak for itself.

“Natalie and I decided on an understated makeup look to highlight the grandness and drama of her dress,” VanLeeuwen tells PeopleStyle. “And Natalie was in complete agreement!”

Keeping the focus on the star’s eyes, VanLeeuwen began by selecting an eye shadow palette (Votre Vu Palette Play in Violette) that perfectly matched the gown’s grayish-blue hue, along with its shimmery gold embellishments.

The makeup pro then primed the star’s eye lids with a very light sheen shade (Chiffon) from the palette. He swept the pink tone (Raw Silk) over Dormer’s lids and up to the crease, and deepened her outer eye crease with the plum shade (Moiré) to create depth and dimension. He then lined the star’s lower and upper lash lines with a plum, almost-brown gel eyeliner (Votre Vu Le Joli Crayon in Aubergine), and then finished the eyes with a few coats of Lancôme mascara (we recommend this one).

“I didn’t want the harshness of black and liked the way the aubergine played against the color of the dress,” he says. “It is a classic natural dramatic eye.”

And for the lips, VanLeeuwen made Dormer’s pout pop with the help of a rich rose lip liner (Votre Vu Drawmatic Lip Liner in Naked), which he used to outline and then fill in her lips. The makeup pro topped her lips with Votre Vu French Kiss Moisture Riche Lipstick in LouLou, which gave them a nice glossy finish.

As for Dormer’s hair, Giannandrea played with texture, creating what he calls a “high pompadour-styled updo with a feminine, rock ‘n’ roll vibe.”

“I am inspired by Natalie’s effortless aesthetic style,” he tells PeopleStyle. “Every time I work with her I try to maintain her own sense of style and personality, in order to create a look that feels real and genuine.”

So how’d the hair guru get the look? He first began by applying Macadamia Professional Foaming Volumizer from the star’s roots to the ends of her wet hair. He then blew out her hair using a large round brush (we like this one from Cricket) to create body and movement.

And to create the most important part of this look — the “windswept texture” — Giannandrea simply rubbed in a small amount of Macadamia Professional Whipped Detailing Cream all over the star’s strands, to create the textured separated style. Giannandrea then teased Dormer’s roots at the crown to give her hair some height and added volume.

“This texture was mainly created with hands and products, more like sculpting and arranging shapes and proportions,” he says. “It takes sensibility and practice and is definitely much more fun when you use your hands.”

After the volumizing prep, Giannandrea twisted the hair into small to medium sections and then pinned them back, while the star’s remaining hair was gathered into a bun in the back of her head and secured with pins. Giannandrea kept some pieces, including face-framing wispys, loose for effect. For maximum hold, he sprayed in Macadamia Professional Flex Hold Shaping Spray to finish the look.

So what was Dormer’s reaction to the finished product — hair and all? She was “thrilled,” VanLeeuwen says.

“I could tell she felt beautiful and confident,” he tells PeopleStyle. “She said something like, ‘I love it — you boys are amazing!’”
