Look of the Week: Salma Hayek’s Shimmery Pink Eye Shadow

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to recreate the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature, Look of the Week.

Salma Hayek has been turning it out on the red carpet for decades. But that doesn’t mean she can’t surprise us every now and then — especially in the beauty department. Enter in her latest look for the screening of GKIDS’ Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet in L.A., where she donned dual-textured rosy eye shadow and the dewiest, glowiest skin we’ve seen since J.Lo’s birthday celebration. Mary Phillips, the actress’s go-to makeup guru (she’s been working with the star for seven years!), is giving us the exclusive scoop on how to nail the summery look on your own.

To add a seasonal pop of color to Hayek’s otherwise all-black ensemble, Phillips opted for a soft rose-colored eye shadow to stand out against the star’s monochromatic outfit. “I like when things weave in and out of being contrasting for a red carpet look, or any look for that matter,” she says. “It helps to break things up and keep things looking current and modern.”

To nail that pinky shade of shadow, if you look close enough, you’ll see that Phillips actually used two different shades — a shimmery rose (from Tom Ford’s Eye Shadow Quad in Seductive Rose) and a similar matte (from Tom Ford’s Eye Shadow Quad in Cognac Sable) — instead of a single solid matte hue, which would have fallen “too flat,” she says.

“The matte brings out the shimmer, and the shimmer brings out the matte, and those opposing forces make her natural eye color sparkle,” Phillips says. It’s the black liner [Charlotte Tilbury’s Rock ‘N’ Kohl Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil in Bedroom Black] that really marries the two “finishes” together, and it’s the top and bottom application of the black liner that makes it all pop!

And as for that radiant glow, Phillips lightly tapped Nordic Beauty Healing Face Oil Serum right above Hayek’s brow bone, on her cheek bones and her Cupid’s bow for a subtle, not-too-shiny sheen. She then added a subtle touch of color with Nuance Salma Hayek Spice 305 Flawless Mineral Cheek Trio onto the apples of the star’s cheeks.

So what did Hayek think of the final look? Phillips says the actress loved it. But she quickly noted, “When someone’s that beautiful, there’s not a lot that needs to happen.” We couldn’t agree more.
