Just 18 months ago, Marissa Webb was challenged with reinventing the Banana Republic brand. And now, the former star designer has decided to step down as the brand’s creative director and executive vice president, reports WWD.
Webb, who carries her own namesake label, has spent a decade at J. Crew, dealing with all facets from marketing to designing and styling. But with her latest decision, the fashion influencer isn’t completely parting ways – she’ll still act as creative advisor to Banana Republic, just without the extensive responsibilities that have been held for the past year and a half.

The decision comes after the American retailer has been seeing a major decline in sales, even though Webb accomplished some serious endeavors – like taking the label to New York Fashion Week for the first time this year. “Marissa has brought incredible passion and leadership to Banana Republic over the last year and a half. I admire her talent and tenacity and the creative spirit that she’s infused within our brand, all while further establishing her private label,” Andi Owen, Banana’s global president told WWD.
According to the New York Times, Gap said it won’t be hiring a creative director to fill the vacant post – which is a repetitive strategy that we’ve seen at its other lines. We’re just hoping that with Webb’s new position, there will still be opportunity to see her edgy take on straightforward workwear.
