Naomi Watts Shares the Most Important Thing She’s Learned About Red Carpet Diamonds

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend — particularly if you can give them back at the end of the night.

Naomi Watts, 46, told us that being lent gorgeous jewels — like the Nirav Modi diamond waterfall earrings she wore Tuesday night at the luxury jewelry brand’s U.S. launch in N.Y.C. — isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The Australian Vogue cover star has worn some stunning jewels on the red carpet, but as it turns out, borrowing them makes her nervous.

“It’s quite nerve-racking owning anything too expensive anyways, so it’s fine to give it back,” Watts tells PEOPLE of her red carpet loans. “If it’s a place like Cannes Film Festival or whatever, you have [security] people looking out for it, but I like giving [jewelry] back. I don’t want to be responsible for losing anything.”

While most of her red carpet dazzlers go back in their vault at the end of the night, she’s understandably attached to one particular diamond from longtime love Liev Schreiber: “The ring that he gave to me a long time ago.”

The star has plenty of red carpet statements (both sparkling and otherwise) under her belt, but the actress says that when it comes to fashion, “it’s good to be a little bit daring, but I need to be comfortable.”

And as for those pesky fashion rules like ‘no white after Labor Day?’ The red carpet veteran says she doesn’t “pay attention to when you can or can’t wear something.” In fact, if it were up to Watts she says she would live in “jeans” forever!
