New York Nail Salons Now Have A Workers’ Bill Of Rights

If you can recall, a few weeks ago we covered a controversial article, reported by The New York Times, which unleashed a major investigation into New York’s nail salon scene. And as you can guess, the issue pretty much became a topic being talked about everywhere – so much that we were ready to ditch our weekly mani/pedi appointments and go the DIY route.

Luckily, the exploitation of nail salon workers was brought to the attention of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who immediately stepped up for a much-needed change. And after rallying for better work conditions, Cuomo introduced an official Bill of Rights for all New York nail salon workers.

Available in ten languages, the declaration outlines a range of necessary details from proper wages and overtime, to safety regulations and more. In addition, Cuomo’s task force also outlined five questions every nail salon customer should ask before receiving service:

1. Are workers getting paid at least the minimum wage and overtime?
2. Is appropriate protective equipment being provided to workers and used?
3. Is there adequate ventilation (i.e., no strong chemical odors)?
4. Is the salon business license visible in plain view?
5. Is the new Nail Salon Workers’ Bill of Rights posted in plain view?

According to Fashionista, Governor Cuomo addressed the situation by touching on the responsibility that NY consumers hold. “We are calling on New Yorkers to use their power as consumers to patronize nail salons who treat employees fairly, and boycott those unscrupulous businesses who profit by exploiting their workers,” Cuomo said in a statement.

While we know things won’t change overnight, this a definitely major step in the right direction for salon workers. Hopefully they’ll begin to receive the treatment and compensation that they deserve.

But if you’re still on the fence about heading back to your usual nail salon (like us), we’ve gathered some major nail inspo, thanks to Instagram, that you can try at home — with the help of a few accessories of course!.
