Retrospective On Yves Saint Laurent Open In England

County Durham’s Bowes Museum is known for one of its most famous exhibits “Birds of Paradise: Feathers and Plumes in Fashion,” which included work by the late Alexander McQueen, and Vivienne Westwood’s shoes.

Now, a new exhibition dedicated to legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent is coming to Bowes Museum, and is expected to be a game changer for fashion lovers outside of London. Titled Style is Eternal, the world-class show will be available to viewers until October and will bring in visitors from all over the world.

Adrian Jenkins, the Bowes Museum’s director, believes that the idea to showcase Saint Laurent’s iconic styles stems from wanting to raise the museum’s international profile. “We see this as a change in the way we operate as a business,” Jenkins said. “We are looking to raise our international profile. Like any regional museum we are facing cuts but rather than go on the back foot we are going on the front foot. We are dealing with it by being as ambitious as we possibly can.”

Saint Laurent’s penchant for dressing women in suits in the 1960s to golden capes of the 1980s is a large part of his influence in fashion. The exhibition will feature 54 pieces chosen by the museum’s own keeper of fashion Joanna Hashagen and the Yves Saint Laurent Foundation in Paris. A three room space has been created within the Bowes Museum, which will feature the first tuxedo trouser suit created for women (Le Smoking) and the famous dazzling pink dress that was only shown once during a fashion preview in 1958 attended by the late Princess Margaret when YSL was working for Christian Dior.

“We hope that we have a hugely successful summer and a lot more visitors to the Bowes Museum,” Mr. Jenkins said. “We think that this is an example that high art and culture can take place outside of London and that’s an important point that people take away who visit this exhibition.”

Yves Saint Laurent: Style is Eternal is currently open to the public now and will run until October 25.
